Mother’s day is coming! A moment to celebrate that most beautiful (if sometimes challenging) relationship between a mother and her children.
On mother’s day the whole family focuses on giving and receiving that extra bit of love to say “thank you”. Why not exchange a truly special home-made gift that gets the kids entertained and is a bit kinder to the planet?
Here are some ideas you can try at home:
- Home-made cards. This one is easy. Grab a piece of paper or coloured cardboard and go crazy drawing and decorating. Pick up leaves and flowers from outside and bits of string, old greetings cards and ribbon that you may have laying around. See some ideas here.
- Plant beauty. One of the best presents you can give out is a plant that they can keep forever. Try giving a herb garden they can use for cooking, growing your own from seeds (Amersham’s Repair Cafe is organising a seed swap on the 2nd of March, come over to get some!) or buying one at the garden center and decorating it for example with twigs or other bits. Keep the planters more eco-friendly by reusing bits you may have at home such as tins of olives, milk cartons or even clean old eggshells!
- Heart Nature Collages. Great for the smallest kids. Cut out a heart in cardboard, go out to pick up some nature treasures like flowers, leaves or twigs and stick them on the cardboard with double-sided sticky tape. Hang them up by punching a hole in them and threading a bit of string. Use paper tape instead of single use plastic!
- Natural wellness delight. Most care products can actually be replicated with natural ingredients. For the older kids give making bath bombs a go; try milk and honey, meditation bath bombs, and Strawberry Milkshake bath bombs. You can also try creating a face mask; mix 1 tablespoon of matcha tea (full of natural antioxidants and vitamins), 1 teaspoon of honey, and 2 tablespoons of Aloe vera gel and put them in a clean repurposed glass jar.

Parents For Future are organising a Crafting session at their monthly EcoHub in Berkhamstead. Why not have a look and get some additional ideas?
And lastly from “little green adventures” we want to say thank you! Thank you to all the mums everywhere who spend their days (and nights!!) working and worrying to make this world a better place through every step of turning a little creature into a beautiful citizen of the planet.
Happy Mother’s day!
