Volunteer in nature: hedge pruning and planting – 22nd March

This event has happened

Come and help plant young native trees and prune an existing hedge together with other volunteers to create a biodiverse hedge for wildlife.

This event is free and open to anyone who is happy to help; you don’t need any special skills. You need to wear sturdy, waterproof shoes and old, warm clothes. We will provide tools as well as cake and hot drinks (though if you want to bring a spade or trowel, please do).

Wild Amersham has helped St Mary’s School in Old Amersham to obtain a gift of 200 native hedging ‘whips’ (young trees) from the Woodland Trust. On 22 March we will plant these into the existing hedge around the School’s playing field, and give the existing hedge a bit of a trim. This will help to make the hedge thicker and better for biodiversity.

Hedges give great shelter and nesting opportunities, and their flowers, berries and nuts are a vital food source for invertebrates, birds and mammals. However, over 118,000 miles of hedges have been destroyed in the UK since 1950. Wild Amersham is helping its partners to grow thick and diverse native hedging to help increase biodiversity. Come and join us!

How it went

Almost 50 parents and children and 5 Wild Amersham volunteers turned up to plant 200 tree saplings donated by the Woodland Trust.

They then trimmed the existing hedge. All this will help to make the hedge thicker and more diverse, so it can provide food, shelter and nesting spaces for lots of creatures.
