Explore the Rose Family (workshop 1) – 20th April

9:30am – 12:00pm – Amersham Museum, Old Amersham, HP7 0DP

Come and join a local botanist to learn about the large and diverse Rosaceae (Rose) plant family. In the first workshop, we will begin with an introduction to the concept of a plant family.

You will learn:

  • what a plant family is, how it relates to classification and taxonomy, and why it is useful
  • vegetative features (leaves and stems) of species within Rosaceae
  • a few botanical terms to help describe these features
  • how leaves and stems can aid identification

This is suitable for nature lovers and gardeners alike, and no previous botany knowledge is required! Bring a notebook and pen, and a hand lens or wildflower guide if you have them.

This is a first of three standalone but connected workshops; the first will look at the Rose family and its botanical features; later ones will explore roses outdoors and historical connotations. In partnership with Wild Amersham, this series of workshops for adults offers an introduction to the concept of a ‘Plant Family’, by exploring the Rose family, Rosaceae. This is not a family exclusively of roses – it is also home to a diverse array of other plants. These include many of our domestic fruits (Cherries, Strawberries, Apples, Raspberries), as well as garden plants (Potentilla, Spiraea, Alchemilla) and wildflowers (Wood Avens, Agrimony and Tormentil).

Tickets cost £15 – buy your tickets on the Amersham museum website.
