This season is, in some ways, the most beautiful to walk through our woods. Go for a roam as a family to soak up the change of pace brought by the cooler weather and shorter days.
Look up! Appreciate the colour ranges brought in by the different tree leaves while you learn about evergreen and deciduous trees (which keep or lose all their leaves at this time of the year).
Look down too, as the brown and golden leaves, discarded seeds and other bits of nature carpet the floor in a mushiness that holds so much life.
You can visit a wood close to home, such as Rectory Woods, Chesham Bois Woods and Hirvine Woods, or go further afield to Burnham Beeches (this one is a favourite!), Black Park or Wendover Woods.
Here go some wood activities for all the family:
- Identify as many trees as you can and tick them off! Why not download the Woodland trust’s app or print out this guide to distinguishing leaves by London imperial college
- How about following Zog’s Trail at Wendover Woods? There is a Virtual Reality app and kids love finding the badges and getting golden stars!
- Try these leaf crafts!
- Listen! What can you hear? If you stop and listen you will realise that there are a lot of birds around. Try to identify them with the Wildlife Trusts audio guide
