Community Swap Cafe, St Michael’s Church, 5th of October 10 am -1 pm, free, no need to register
Amersham Community Swap Cafe – Swap or buy pre-loved toys, costumes, clothes or books, for children. Have a cuppa and a chat while helping your pocket, the planet and your sanity!
As a parent with young children, do you ever feel as if toys, clothes and books are taking over your home and your life?
With all the gifting all throughout the year, we all end up with a house so full of Lego, cars and teddies that they spill out of every drawer and cupboard. We constantly fight to declutter, and we only end up buying new ones later on. Each one of these precious toys are expensive and take a lot of energy and resources to build and mostly end up in landfill.
In comes the Toy Swap movement!
Sustainable Amersham will expand our Toy Swap, that previously took place at Amersham Library as part of their “little green adventures”. We will take over the church hall to provide a welcoming set-up where everyone can come in, have a cup of tea and cake and browse toys, Halloween costumes, clothes and books for our little ones.
Orca & Bee, a local eco-friendly retailer will also have a stall there and the local Parents For Future volunteers will be present to give us some extra ideas on how to make our planet a place where our kids can thrive!
You can bring in your pre-loved toys and things and swap them for different ones or just get some by giving a donation giving these items a breath of new life by rehoming them. This keeps the unwanted items away from landfill and reduced the need for new purchases that impact our planet so much.
Reinforcing having “one toy in, one toy out” helps kids part with their beloved items while giving them something new to play with. It is so much fun!
Sustainable Amersham’s volunteers will be organising these and more “little green adventures” helped by funding from the Amersham & Villages Community Board and donations given by parents.
Kids are really, really welcome. We want them to be involved in building a world where they can thrive in! At the event, please keep a close eye on them as there may be smaller toys around and we want our little ones to be really safe.
It is really simple:
- Have a look at the toys you have at home, find any your children are not using and are in good condition. You can bring toys (no plug-in toys please! we do accept battery powered ones though), costumes, clothes and books!
- Pop them in a bag and bring them over on the day to the church. There will be someone as you come in to direct you and explain how this works.
- Come in, see what is there and pick up any toys you like and bring them to the reception. You will be able to take approximately the same amount of toys that you brought in, but we are not particularly precious about this. The main focus is on giving toys and clothes a new life! We will have a flip-chart there to record how many items get swapped.
- Have a cup of tea while your kids have a look at what is there. We will have tea and coffee and some home made cakes as well as some tables to sit down and relax.
- Chat to us! There will be a number of Sustainable Amersham volunteers around helping out and a couple of stalls with eco friendly items and information. Learn about all the things we are doing to create a future our children can thrive in. Why not join our little green adventures newsletter?
- Take your toys and costumes home and enjoy!
We hope you enjoy this event. As the items swapped are not provided by Sustainable Amersham we cannot be responsible on the condition of them once you take them with you. If you find an item doesn’t quite work out for you, have a look at our post on some ideas on how to dispose of it in a more sustainable way.
Special thanks to the Amersham & Villages Community Board for funding this event!
We have started offering Toyswap’s for local school PTAs. These can be an excellent way to look after the environment and raise a bit of money for your kids school. Contact us if this could work for you!
Contact us if you are interested in participating and want to help us organise this event. We need help to organise this and our other events!
Let’s create a future where our children can thrive!
