Climate book club: 39 ways to save the planet – 10th Feb

6:30pm to 8:00pm – the Beech House, HP6 5BW

Join our friendly, informal book club for anyone curious about the environment, sustainability, or how we can build a better future together. Each time, we read a book (or just a chapter!) and come together to chat about the ideas it sparks.

It’s free to attend and everyone’s welcome.

How it works

  • read as much as you like – the whole book or just a chapter.
  • let us know you’re coming – so we can save you a seat.
  • join the conversation – we’ll explore the themes, raise questions, and share reflections in a relaxed setting.

You don’t need to be an expert or have read the whole book, just come open to listening, learning, and meeting friendly, like-minded people.

This month’s book

We’ll be discussing “39 ways to save the planet” by Tom Heap. This book discusses real-world solutions to climate change that are happening around the world, right now. From tiny rice seeds and fossil fuel free steel to grazing elk and carbon-capturing seagrass meadows, each chapter reveals the energy and optimism. We hope to see you there!

Environomics: how the green economy is transforming the world

The book takes readers through an “average day” to trace where green economic shifts are already happening around us, for example, turning on a light, checking your phone, drinking coffee. It highlights how sustainability is affecting everyday industry: energy, fashion, tech, shipping, food, finance, and construction.

Our verdict: We found it challenging to read but very insightful and balanced.

Not the end of the world

The book covers big sustainability topics and uses data analysis to highlight the most problematic issues, as well as the areas we can worry less about. We found its clear summaries of the most effective actions especially helpful. It does a great job of articulating what makes the biggest difference, and shows the (sometimes surprising) progress we’ve already made – while setting out the solutions we have available in a genuinely inspiring way.

Our verdict: this was a stimulating read that gave us some different, and hopeful, perspectives.
