9am to 1pm – Amersham Band, Rectory Meadow (corner of School Lane and Rectory Hill), Amersham HP7 0BU
Wild Amersham is holding a wildflower meadow scything session on 16th August at Amersham Band and St Mary’s School, where volunteers have already helped restore the meadows to their natural state.
Our trained scythers will cut the grass, so you can help rake up the cuttings and pile them up as new homes for insects, amphibians and hedgehogs. It’s a chance to see traditional meadow management in action and meet other people who care about nature – a proper ‘wild gym’ day out.
Chalk wildflower meadows are among the most biodiverse habitats in Europe, providing food and shelter for a huge range of wildlife. They’ve reduced by 97% since the Second World War, so restoring even small local sites makes a real difference.
What to expect
- watch how scything is done
- help rake up the arisings
- meet other volunteers
- enjoy a hot drink and cake afterwards
Wear sturdy shoes such as walking boots (not trainers), and bring water and sun protection. Tools, hot drinks and cake are provided, and there’s parking and toilets on site.
This is free to join, email hello@sustainableamersham.org to register.
